Jordan launches fifth tobacco industry interference index report

Amman, September 29 (Petra) – Jordan launched the fifth edition of the Tobacco Industry Interference Index on Monday at the Royal Society for Health Education, under the patronage of Princess Dina Mired.

Princess Mired said that tobacco use poses a growing threat to the health of children, youth and women and called the fight against smoking a national and ethical responsibility.

Minister of Health Ibrahim Bdour said the 2023–2024 report supports the sixth objective of the National Tobacco Control Strategy 2024–2030, aligning with directives from His Majesty King Abdullah II to protect public health and curb tobacco use in all forms.

The report, produced in partnership with national and international health organisations, showed a slight improvement in Jordan's index score, rising by two points to 80%, largely due to the adoption of the new national strategy.

CEO of the Global Alliance Against Tobacco, Leslie Ray Fratt, praised Jordan's efforts as a model for the region, while Amal Areij, Director General of the Royal Society for Health Education, underscored the importance of civil society and youth in resisting tobacco industry influence.

A panel discussion followed, featuring Princess Dina and public health experts who discussed the report's findings and recommendations.

The report aims to raise awareness and provide tools to counter tobacco industry interference, in line with Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
