Amman, Oct. 19 (Petra) -- The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is finalizing a new Energy Strategy for 2025–2035, setting a bold course toward cleaner, more secure, and sustainable energy systems.

The plan aims to strengthen national energy security, expand renewable sources, and enhance the country’s economic competitiveness through a stable and affordable energy supply.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr. Saleh Kharabsheh said during the national workshop held on Sunday that the updated strategy represents a cornerstone for Jordan’s next decade of growth. He explained that it balances three priorities, energy security, sustainability, and efficiency, to create a framework that supports both the economy and the environment.

Prepared by ministry experts with technical support from the European Union, the draft strategy analyzes several pathways for the energy sector’s development. It envisions Jordan as a regional model for clean energy transition, aligning with the Economic Modernization Vision 2033 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The workshop gathered representatives from government agencies, the private sector, academia, and international partners to review the proposed scenarios and strategic directions. The draft includes plans to expand the Risha gas field, develop renewable and green hydrogen projects, and build modern gas infrastructure in Amman and Zarqa. It also focuses on improving energy efficiency in industry, transport, and buildings, and reducing electricity losses to 8 percent by 2035.

Dr. Kharabsheh noted that the strategy outlines two growth scenarios: a reference path based on current policies and a more ambitious plan that aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 50 percent by 2033. This goal, he said, reflects Jordan’s determination to remain at the forefront of clean energy development in the region.

Participants praised the ministry’s inclusive and consultative approach, emphasizing the importance of continuous updates to keep pace with global advances in technology and market trends. Kharabsheh concluded the workshop by thanking contributors and confirming that all feedback will be incorporated before the final version of the strategy is submitted to the Cabinet for approval.

The new strategy underscores Jordan’s commitment to building a resilient, competitive, and low-carbon energy sector, one that fuels national progress while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
