Amman, Oct. 22 (Petra) – The "Challenges and Opportunities" workshop, part of the Climate Action Roadmap for Buildings and Construction in Jordan project, began Wednesday under the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership framework, in cooperation with the German Energy Agency (dena) and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi).

Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Amani Azzam, who patronized the event, said the project marks a key step toward achieving carbon neutrality in buildings by 2050. She noted that the sector accounts for more than 40 percent of total final energy use and over 60 percent of electricity consumption by 2024, making it one of the main contributors to energy demand and carbon emissions.

Azzam added that more than 70 percent of Jordan’s buildings were constructed before energy efficiency codes were adopted, highlighting the need for retrofitting, improved insulation, upgraded air conditioning and lighting systems, and increased renewable energy use.

She pointed out that the Ministry has launched three national energy efficiency plans and a National Green Growth Plan aimed at cutting emissions by 14 percent by 2030, in addition to implementing green building and energy efficiency codes in new and government projects.

The workshop, led by Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Directorate Director Lina Mubaideen, gathered representatives from public and private institutions, academia, and civil society. Participants discussed sector challenges, opportunities, and ways to boost energy efficiency and sustainable design practices.

Mubaideen underscored the workshop’s participatory approach in identifying challenges and outlining opportunities to address them.

The event is part of a series of workshops contributing to the development of a national roadmap based on the Global ABC methodology, engaging national and international stakeholders to align efforts toward sustainability and climate goals. This meeting represents a key milestone in advancing the roadmap, which seeks to drive climate action in the building and construction sector and support Jordan’s transition toward a low-carbon future.
