Amman, Sept. 23 (Petra) – South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa expressed concern over the current ineffectiveness of the UN Security Council in fulfilling its mandate to maintain international peace and security, warning of a "decline in the Council’s credibility and its failure to ensure accountability and enforce international law." Speaking before the UN General Assembly, Ramaphosa highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian and security situations in regions including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Gaza. He voiced concern over certain countries’ violations of international law and their defiance of UN decisions and rulings from bodies such as the International Court of Justice.
He also referred to the case South Africa filed with the International Court of Justice regarding Israel’s obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in Gaza.
