Southern Shuneh, Sep. 15 (Petra) – The Jordan Valley Authority (JVA) and the Royal Engineering Corps of the Jordan Armed Forces on Monday signed an agreement to clean and dredge the Shuaib Dam to boost its storage capacity and water harvesting efficiency.
In a statement, the JVA said the agreement, signed by Secretary-General Hisham Haisa and Royal Engineering Corps Director Brig. Gen. Ashraf Odat, forms part of national efforts to enhance water resources and implement development projects that benefit citizens.
Haisa said expanding water harvesting and improving storage efficiency are priorities for the water sector, despite the high cost of removing sediment and silt. He noted that work is underway across several dams to clear sediment and waste, preserve the environment, and maximize water use for economic, tourism, and agricultural purposes, in cooperation with the Armed Forces.
He added that the agreement will run until September 7, 2026, enabling the removal of all planned quantities of silt and sediment, raising the dam’s efficiency and improving water management.
Haisa underscored that partnering with the Royal Engineering Corps marks a qualitative step in dam cleaning and excavation nationwide, contributing to environmental development, better living conditions, and new local agricultural and pastoral projects.
For his part, Odat said the Armed Forces are proud to contribute to this vital project and are leveraging their technical expertise to support national efforts. He reaffirmed ongoing cooperation with the JVA to serve national interests.
