Amman, Oct. 21 (Petra) The Ministry of Environment, in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), announced the launch of new strategic projects to implement the Montreal Protocol and its amendments, aimed at helping Jordan’s industrial sector transition to environmentally friendly alternatives and technologies.

The announcement came on the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, held under the theme "From Science to Global Action," and attended by representatives from ministries, international organizations, and the private sector, reaffirming Jordan’s commitment to its international environmental responsibilities.

Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman said during the launch ceremony that the project marks a new milestone in the active partnership between national institutions and international organizations. He noted that the implementation of the Kigali Amendment for 2024–2026 embodies His Majesty King Abdullah II’s vision for achieving sustainable development and a green economy that enhances the competitiveness of national industries through the adoption of modern, sustainable technologies.

For her part, UNIDO Resident Representative in Jordan, Sulafa Mdanat, expressed pride in the organization’s partnership with the Kingdom, describing Jordan as a regional model in sustainable climate and industrial action.

"We are proud of this cooperation, which reflects Jordan’s commitment to transitioning toward a low-carbon economy and advancing industrial innovation as part of its green transformation journey," she said.

The ceremony featured the signing of tripartite agreements between the Ministry of Environment, UNIDO, and several national companies in the refrigeration and air conditioning sectors, marking a new phase of cooperation. The agreements aim to build local capacity to adopt alternative substances and technologies that protect the ozone layer and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The project aligns with the Economic Modernization Vision 2023–2033, which serves as a national roadmap for inclusive and sustainable growth through supporting industrial investment, enhancing competitiveness, and expanding job opportunities for youth and women in line with Jordan’s national direction toward a low-emission green economy.

This cooperation represents a strategic step toward achieving a balance between economic growth and environmental protection, reinforcing Jordan’s position as a regional hub for sustainable industries and green technologies, and contributing to safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Jordan was among the first countries to sign the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol and its amendments, including the Kigali Amendment in 2019, which entered into force in 2020. The Kingdom has made significant progress in phasing out ozone-depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, and methyl bromide, as well as implementing successful programs for the gradual elimination of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
