Amman, Nov. 2 (Petra) -- Jordan reaffirmed its commitment to education, cultural preservation, and international cooperation during the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Leading the Jordanian delegation, Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Azmi Mahafzah underscored the Kingdom’s achievements across education, science, and culture, while calling for collective global efforts to advance sustainable development and inclusive learning.

Addressing the plenary session, Dr. Mahafzah said Jordan remains a staunch partner of UNESCO, noting that 2025 marks 75 years of membership in the organization, a milestone he described as "a reflection of shared values and enduring cooperation." He highlighted national initiatives in sustainable and "green" education, as well as ongoing efforts to safeguard Jordan’s cultural heritage and promote its identity through international frameworks.

Turning to regional developments, Dr. Mahafzah condemned Israeli violations in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, denouncing the loss of civilian lives and the destruction of schools and universities. He also warned against efforts to alter Jerusalem’s Arab, Islamic, and Christian identity, reaffirming Jordan’s role under the Hashemite Custodianship in protecting holy sites.

The minister urged the international community to support UNRWA in maintaining essential educational and humanitarian services for Palestinian refugees.

He further stressed the need for joint action on youth empowerment, gender equality, and ethics in science and technology, commending UNESCO’s continued partnership in supporting Jordan’s national programs.

Held every two years, the UNESCO General Conference is the organization’s highest decision-making body, bringing together ministers, diplomats, and experts to set global education and culture priorities. This year’s session in Samarkand, a historic Silk Road city, runs through November 13, with broad participation from member states and international organizations.
