Amman, Dec. 16 (Petra) -- United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for increased support to countries hosting refugees, particularly low- and middle-income nations that accommodate nearly three-quarters of the world’s refugees.
According to the official UN news website, Guterres made these remarks in a video statement presented during the second High-Level Officials Meeting to review progress on the Global Refugee Forum, which began on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, and continues until Wednesday, in partnership with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Swiss government.
The UN Secretary-General noted that the first international agreement on migration adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2018 remains a guiding framework for moving forward.
He added "we must boost refugee inclusion and self-reliance, a dignified way to unlock human potential, lift up local economies and lower dependency on aid." Guterres further said "we must enable people to safely return home, as 1 million Syrians have done in the past 12 months." //Petra//WH
