Amman, Oct. 25 (Petra) Police on Saturday detained a group of individuals who unlawfully drove their vehicles inside pedestrian and bicycle lanes in Amman, which the Greater Amman Municipality had designated as safe spaces for citizens.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Karim Abu Dalu said that the ministry remains committed to ensuring the safety of citizens and users of these pedestrian and cycling paths known as "walkways" which serve as safe recreational spaces for walking and cycling by individuals and families. These lanes, he noted, are clearly marked with visible ground signs and instructional boards distinguishing them from regular roads and sidewalks.
Abu Dalu said that, as part of the ministry’s responsibility for traffic safety and its duty to pursue those who endanger the lives of others, authorities apprehended several individuals who violated the law by driving recklessly and performing stunts within these designated safe lanes.
He described their behavior as dangerous, irresponsible, and a serious breach of traffic regulations and public safety standards.
He added that legal and administrative measures were taken against the offenders, including requiring them to sign financial undertakings worth JD50,000 each, administratively detaining them at Marka Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, impounding their vehicles for one month, and issuing traffic violations in accordance with the Traffic Law.
The ministry, he continued, will coordinate with the Greater Amman Municipality to take the necessary technical steps to prevent vehicles from entering these safe lanes, thereby preserving their exclusivity and safety for pedestrians and families.
Abu Dalu affirmed that the Interior Ministry will continue to strictly enforce the law and take firm administrative action against anyone who encroaches on these pedestrian and cycling lanes, stressing that such acts endanger lives and contradict the social and civic values of Jordanian society.
