Amman, Sep. 15 (Petra) – The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Department of Antiquities, in cooperation with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, are organizing the 16th International Conference on the History and Archaeology of Jordan (ICHAJ 16). The event will be held under the patronage of HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal from September 22 to 26, 2025, in Athens, Greece.

According to a statement by the Department of Antiquities on Monday, HRH Prince El Hassan, the initiator and permanent sponsor of the conference, said, "We need to create continuity between the past, present, and future, transcending narrow national boundaries toward the Levant as a single region. This will contribute to regional stability and enhance its standing." Director General of the Department of Antiquities, Fawzi Abu Danneh, highlighted the conference as a prestigious international scientific event that showcases Jordan’s historical and archaeological heritage, enhancing its role as a regional center for knowledge and cultural dialogue. He noted that the timing of the conference underscores Jordan’s importance in regional and international tourism and cultural spheres.

Held every three years, the conference is a major gathering for scholars and researchers specializing in the history and archaeology of Jordan, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Euro-Mediterranean cultural relations. Its inaugural session took place in 1980 at Oxford University under the patronage of HRH Prince El Hassan.

The ICHAJ 16 will feature approximately 265 research papers covering a wide range of topics, with participation from Jordanian, Arab, and international scholars. The program includes workshops, academic lectures, and specialized committee meetings addressing Jordan’s cultural and historical heritage across 13 courses, including "Archaeology, Identity, and Human Rights," "Climate Change and Cultural Heritage," and "Sustainable Tourism and World Heritage Sites in Jordan." This year’s theme is "Historical Archaeology and Sustainability: Learning from the Past Towards a Safer and More Resilient Future." //Petra// AJ
