Amman, Dec 16 (Petra) - Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Amani Azzam, representing Jordan in the co-presidency of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), participated on Tuesday in the opening session of the annual conference of the UfM Working Group on Gas, Emissions Abatement and Hydrogen, held in Paris.
In her address, Azzam said natural gas will remain, in the coming periods, a key component in achieving a balance between energy security, environmental sustainability and energy costs in the Mediterranean region, stressing the importance of enhancing regional cooperation amid the ongoing energy transition.
According to a statement issued by the ministry, Azzam reviewed Jordan’s efforts to develop the infrastructure of the Arab Gas Pipeline and to connect the gas line coming from the Risha field in eastern Jordan to the regional network, in a move aimed at strengthening energy supply security and supporting regional integration among countries of the region.
She noted that work is under way to reinforce the gas system in the Kingdom, including the establishment of a permanent onshore regasification unit, as well as a lease-to-own arrangement for a floating storage unit (FSU). At the same time, she reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to continuing the development of renewable energy projects and focusing on green hydrogen as part of its future vision for the energy sector.
In her closing remarks, Azzam stressed the importance of translating the outcomes of the discussions into practical projects and tangible cooperation, reiterating the Kingdom’s commitment, through its role in the UfM co-presidency, to supporting dialogue and regional cooperation to build a secure and sustainable energy system serving the countries and peoples of the region.
