Amman, Oct. 2 (Petra) – Musa Maaytah, Chairperson of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), underlined Thursday that the integrity of the electoral process is central to the social contract and a reflection of citizens’ dignity, emphasizing that "justice is not built by force alone, but through consensus and free choice." Speaking at a regional meeting on digital transformation in election administration in Amman, attended by electoral experts and representatives of international institutions, Maaytah described elections as "the fundamental pillar of political legitimacy and a tool for consolidating the rule of law." He stressed that elections are more than an administrative procedure, representing a national pathway to strengthen democracy and shape the future.
Maaytah highlighted Jordan’s advances in developing its electoral system, stating that "tampering with or manipulating elections is unacceptable and will not be tolerated." He noted that the Jordanian experience has become a respected model at the Arab and international levels.
He added that the IEC continually updates its tools to align with technological developments and leverages international best practices in election administration.
On empowering youth and women, Maaytah said, "Youth are the pillar of the present and the strength of the future. Investing in their empowerment and political participation is a national necessity." He noted that the Commission has prepared a practical guide equipping those working with youth with the skills and knowledge needed for effective engagement.
Maaytah also expressed regret over the absence of the Palestinian delegation, prevented from attending due to restrictions imposed by Israeli occupation forces, reaffirming Jordan’s full solidarity with the Palestinian people "in the face of the killing and destruction they are subjected to." He underlined that Jordanian democracy is built on a national foundation, with recent elections demonstrating participation across political forces and the coordinated efforts of state institutions to ensure their success.
Jasmin Sadoun, Director of the Good Governance and Societies Group at the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), emphasized the role of digital transformation in strengthening democracy. She explained that technology provides broader opportunities for youth, women, and persons with disabilities to participate politically, and noted that Jordan represents an important model in this field, stressing that shared responsibility is key to sustaining achievements.
