Experts: UNESCO Listing of Yarmouk Reserve Strengthens Jordan’s Eco-Tourism Appeal

Irbid, Sept. 29 (Petra) -- Jordan scored a major environmental and tourism milestone as the Yarmouk Nature Reserve was officially added to UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Experts say the move elevates the Kingdom’s global eco-tourism profile and unlocks fresh opportunities for investment, research, and community development.

"The UNESCO designation is international recognition of Jordan’s leadership in biodiversity protection and sustainable development," said Reserve Director Mohammad Al-Malkawi. "It puts the Kingdom on the map as a global model for natural resource management, opening the door to joint research projects, new partnerships, and stronger support for local communities." Founded in 2010, the Yarmouk Reserve covers vast forests and valleys in northern Jordan. It shelters rare birds, plants, and animals, while lying along the world migratory bird flyway. Its strategic location overlooking the Yarmouk River, Golan Heights, and Lake Tiberias gives it both environmental and tourism significance.

The listing makes Yarmouk the fourth Jordanian reserve recognized by UNESCO, following Dana, Mujib, and Ajloun. Officials said it reflects the expertise of the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) in balancing conservation with development and involving local communities in environmental decision-making.

Beyond recognition, the move is expected to bring real economic impact. "This will create jobs, attract visitors, and support small businesses in hospitality and handicrafts," said Mashael Al-Khasawneh, Director of Tourism in Irbid. Local activist Maryam Al-Twalbah called it a "historic opportunity" for families in Bani Kinanah to benefit directly from eco-tourism.

Environmental expert Rabia Al-Momani added that Yarmouk will now serve as a natural laboratory for biodiversity and climate change studies. "It strengthens Jordan’s role in sustainable tourism and environmental research, while opening access to international funding and cooperation," she said.
