Amman, Dec. 4 (Petra) – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh underlined the government's commitment to supporting projects that enhance the efficiency and performance of the national electricity grid, praising the National Electric Power Company's efforts in implementing key initiatives that strengthen system reliability.

This came during a field visit by Kharabsheh and the Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Sufian Batayneh, to the Aqaba 400 kV substation on Thursday to review progress on the protection equipment replacement project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

According to a statement issued by NEPCO, the project aims to modernize and increase the reliability of the electricity grid by replacing outdated protection relays with advanced digital systems across several main 400/132 kV substations. The grant supporting the project is valued at approximately USD6 million.

Batayneh said the project was implemented according to schedule, noting that the agreement with JICA represents an important step toward enhancing the reliability and sustainability of the electrical system.

He added that the upgrades will improve electricity supply quality, strengthen grid stability, enhance interconnection capacity, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources by providing greater flexibility in addressing related technical challenges.

He highlighted that system stability is essential for advancing Jordan’s transition to clean energy, particularly as the Kingdom continues to expand renewable energy deployment.

Batayneh stressed that the project reflects the tangible results of international cooperation and the Company’s commitment to advancing grid modernization. He noted that work is underway to monitor the project's implementation and ensure its timely completion.

The project forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Energy and NEPCO to develop the electricity transmission system, enhance grid readiness to meet demand, and improve service reliability across the Kingdom.
