Amman, Dec. 18 (Petra) – Minister of Education Dr. Azmi Mahafzeh said preserving the Arabic language is "a shared responsibility, aimed to ensure its proper use in daily life, develop educational curricula, classrooms, and official communications." Delivering a speech on the occasion of World Arabic Language Day (WALD), which falls on December 18th annually, the minister added that Arabic is the language of the Holy Quran, science, literature, and thought and has contributed to build human civilization and conveyed sciences to the world, given its rich vocabulary, and profound meanings.
Mahafzeh stated this occasion is linked to the United Nations General Assembly's 1973 resolution, which adopted Arabic as an official working language of the organization.
Recognizing its importance, strength, and role in civilization and the dissemination of knowledge, he noted over 400 million people currently speak and use it as a language of learning and communication.
To enhance status of Arabic, he said: "Celebration of this day is a practical call for every individual and institution to take responsibility for its advancement. Schools foster a compassion of Arabic in students through curricula, extracurricular activities, initiatives, and modern teaching methods that connect the language to life and creativity".
Additionally, he noted all educational institutions work to sustainably support scientific research in Arabic and promote translation and authorship, which would contribute to the production of robust knowledge in Arabic, while simultaneously fostering openness to all the world's languages.
