Amman, December 18 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Saud, on Thursday inaugurated the operation of the photovoltaic solar energy project at Zara-Ma'in station.
Funded by a grant from the European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the project has a capacity of 1 megawatt and an annual production of 2.6 gigawatts, valued at JD1.2 million.
According to a ministry statement, the project will save Jordan Water Company (Miyahuna) JD250, 000 annually in operating costs.
This effort is part of the renewable energy projects launched with support from the European Union and EBRD, valued at 30 million euros in the southern Disi area.
The Disi project has a capacity of 24 megawatts and an annual production of 80 gigawatts, and aims to boost water resources and reduce operating costs by JD8 million annually.
The project is part of a "larger" initiative to develop Jordan's renewable energy resources, supported by the European Union and the EBRD.
Talking at the opening ceremony, the minister expressed gratitude to both the European Union and the EBRD for achieveming the strategic goals of the Kingdom's water sector.
These goals, he noted, seek to reduce operating costs, improve services for citizens, ensure sustainability of water services, enhance the local environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, providing a clean energy source, and creating job opportunities that contribute to sustainable development.
EU Ambassador Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, senior Jordanian officials and EBRD representatives attended the inauguration ceremony.
