Amman, October 8 (Petra) - The Higher Population Council (HPC) said the number of divorce cases registered in Jordan over the ten years (2015-2024( has witnessed "overall stability without any worrying indicators." The HPC noted these rates remained within "normal limits," compared to Jordan's population growth and the annual volume of marriages, according to data from the Supreme Judge Department.
In a statement on Wednesday, the HPC's general secretariat said 27% of divorce cases occured during the pre-consummation time over the target period, which involves no children, a situation that increases the chances of a divorced woman to remarry later.
The data showed 19% of all marriages over the past ten years involved divorced women, indicating the continued opportunities for remarriage after the first split up.
Revocable divorces, meanwhile, accounted for approximately 23% of all registered cases, which are incidents that enable the husband to reconcile his wife during the waiting period (Iddah) without a new contract or dowry.
The figures noted the divorce rate in Jordan over the past ten years has averaged 2.4% cases per thousand population, a stable rate that drops to approximately 1.8% incidents per thousand when excluding pre-consummated divorces.
This situation reflects stability of demographic and social patterns associated with marriage and divorce.
The HPC noted economic and living conditions naturally influence marriage and divorce rates, adding that international experience has shown stability or even a decline in these rates with rising prices and declining economic circumstances due to young people's hesitation in deciding to marry or divorce.
On causes, the council noted the potential increase in the number of recorded divorces may be attributed to population growth and the increasing number of married couples and families.
However, the council affirmed the overall rate has not witnessed a "significant increase" over the past decade, reflecting a relative balance in marital relations within Jordanian society.
The council said it is continuously monitoring these indicators fall within its national responsibility to provide demographic knowledge based on evidence and official data.
This endeavor comes in cooperation with the Supreme Judge Department, which is the "primary partner in monitoring and following up on demographic and social changes related to marital status in Jordan," the HPC pointed out.
