Amman, Dec. 15 (Petra) -- Al-Basheer Hospitals have successfully performed a high-risk kidney transplant on a patient with chronic renal failure, overcoming significant immunological challenges in a medical first at the Jordanian Ministry of Health level.
In a statement issued on Monday, the hospital administration said the patient presented with complex immunological risk factors, including positive antibody screening, a positive crossmatch, and positive donor-specific antibodies (DSA), conditions that typically complicate or preclude transplantation due to the high risk of rejection.
To address these challenges, the patient underwent an advanced desensitization protocol at Al-Basheer Hospitals, utilizing state-of-the-art therapeutic techniques aligned with international clinical standards. The protocol successfully reduced immune sensitization to levels deemed safe for transplantation.
The procedure was performed successfully by the hospital’s kidney transplant team under the supervision of Dr. Walid Al-Halabi, Consultant in Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and its subspecialties. Post-operative assessments confirmed excellent functional stability of the transplanted kidney.
Hospital officials said the achievement was realized through direct support and close monitoring by the Ministry of Health, in line with its strategic plan to strengthen public-sector hospitals and expand access to advanced organ transplantation and highly specialized medical services in accordance with global best practices.
The successful transplant marks a significant milestone in enhancing the national capacity for managing complex transplant cases and reinforces the position of Al-Basheer Hospitals as a leading public medical center for specialized and high-complexity care.
Director General of Al-Basheer Hospitals Dr. Ali Al-Abdallat said the institution remains committed to expanding its organ transplant programs and adopting the latest clinical protocols, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, to deliver high-quality, efficient care to patients across the Kingdom.
