Amman, Nov. 17 (Petra) -- Jordan recorded 99 new patent filings between January and the end of October, three of which originated from local inventors, according to the Industrial Property Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply.
The Directorate’s data also indicated robust trademark activity, with 3,821 new trademarks registered and 5,575 existing ones renewed during the same period.
In addition, the Directorate processed a wide range of administrative actions: it renewed 504 patents, issued 13 trademark-use licenses, approved 1,038 requests to update names and addresses linked to industrial property records, and completed 1,821 ownership transfers.
By comparison, last year saw 5,687 trademark registrations, 6,245 renewals, and 111 patent filings, including eight from local inventors.
The Ministry explained that the patent system is designed to protect innovative ideas, whether related to a product, a production method, or both, provided they offer a practical solution to a technical problem. The registration process includes legal and technical review, guidance for inventors, publication in the Official Gazette, and access to records for interested members of the public.
A trademark, meanwhile, is defined as any distinctive sign used or intended to be used to set one’s goods or services apart from those of competitors.
