Amman, Nov. 17 (Petra) – The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Jihad Mahamid, on Monday underlined Jordan's commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, noting that the Kingdom continues to monitor progress toward its goals through a clear methodology based on internationally recognized indicators.

Opening a three-day workshop titled "Capacity Building for Sustainable Development Goal 6 in Jordan (SDG-CDI)," Mahamid said the Ministry has worked closely with its partners over the past years to advance institutional reforms, digital transformation, and data-driven decision-making, in line with the National Water Strategy 2023–2040. The strategy, he said, reflects a forward-looking vision that integrates sustainability, efficiency, and resilience into every policy and project, alongside the Water Sector Information Technology Roadmap 2025.

He highlighted the United Nations' selection of Jordan as a leading country within the capacity building initiative, noting that this reflects the importance of the Ministry’s achievements and its readiness to share expertise and build the necessary capacities for sustainable water management and the integrated implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Spanish Ambassador Miguel de Lucas highlighted the importance of joint cooperation and Spain’s support across various sectors, particularly water and sanitation. He commended the measures Jordan has taken to advance Sustainable Development Goal 6.

United Nations Resident Coordinator Sheri Ritsema-Anderson said the United Nations is working to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 and other goals through partnerships with the Jordanian government and other organizations to address major challenges, including water scarcity and climate change.

She added that Jordan’s water issue is part of its Economic Modernization Vision and is considered a security issue, not merely a challenge. She noted that the workshop aims to discuss these challenges, develop plans, and provide different forms of support.
