Amman, Dec. 23 (Petra) – Environmental and economic experts said the new Amman slaughterhouse project announced by Amman Vision for Investment and Development Company, the investment arm of the Greater Amman Municipality, will generate tangible economic and environmental benefits, including job creation, improved food safety, and enhanced urban infrastructure.
In statements to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), the experts said the project is expected to stimulate local economic activity, support national food security, and meet growing market demand for meat products, while contributing to sustainable urban development in the capital.
Environmental engineering expert Omar Khashman said the project constitutes a key regulatory and planning step within broader efforts to modernize infrastructure, improve urban organization, and reduce the negative environmental impacts of industrial and service facilities.
He noted that the new slaughterhouse is designed to meet advanced environmental and public health standards in line with population growth and increased tourism activity in Amman.
Khashman explained that relocating the slaughterhouse will significantly reduce pollution levels and improve air quality by eliminating environmental pressures in densely populated areas. He added that the project will help control pollution sources, particularly air pollution, while reducing health risks linked to respiratory diseases, allergies, and the spread of rodents and insects. He also pointed to positive effects on residents’ mental well-being by eliminating persistent odors and noise associated with slaughterhouse operations.
Economic policy expert Mohammad Alhadab said the JD50 million project in the Madouna area represents a practical application of the Economic Modernization Vision. He noted that relocating the slaughterhouse outside residential areas reflects a shift toward institutionalized, sustainable public service delivery based on efficiency and public-private partnerships.
Alhadab said the project is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities during construction and operation, while activating supporting sectors such as transportation, veterinary services, refrigeration, packaging, and food processing. He added that international experience shows such projects can attract additional investment by restoring confidence in service infrastructure.
From a fiscal perspective, Alhadab said the project enhances the efficiency of capital spending by replacing an outdated facility with a modern operation that reduces food loss, pollution, and long-term health and environmental costs, thereby lowering future public expenditures.
Animal production expert Mohammad Obeidat said the project will significantly enhance food safety by establishing an integrated slaughterhouse that complies with international standards and best practices. He noted that strict health and processing controls will reduce foodborne disease risks and improve the safety of meat products for human consumption.
Obeidat added that modern waste treatment technologies will mitigate environmental impacts, while advanced production systems will raise meat quality standards, boost consumer confidence, and enhance Jordan’s competitiveness in regional and international markets.
The new Amman slaughterhouse is classified as a priority infrastructure project for the Greater Amman Municipality and a cornerstone of the capital’s long-term urban and economic development plans. The facility will comply with Jordanian and international regulations, including European Union standards and Islamic halal requirements.
Environmental sustainability will be addressed through the establishment of an advanced wastewater treatment plant, with treated water reused for domestic or agricultural purposes, in addition to a waste-to-energy facility aimed at reducing environmental footprints and improving resource efficiency.
