Cairo, November 9 (Petra) – Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League and Head of the Media and Communication Sector Ahmed Khattabi called for supporting Palestinian media, noting that the ongoing asymmetric conflict has shown that many of its victims are media professionals and journalists.
Khattabi highlighted the decision of the Council of Arab Information Ministers to designate May 11 of each year as the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Media.
He urged ensuring protection of journalists during armed conflicts and to prevent their targeting as civilians, in accordance with international humanitarian law, particularly Article 79 of the Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions.
His remarks came during his participation in a dialogue session titled "Gaza: Coverage Continues," held as part of the third edition of the Egypt Media Forum.
Khattabi stressed that the close link between politics and media requires Arab and international outlets to keep pace with the political developments stemming from the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, with the aim of prioritising dialogue and diplomacy to consolidate the ceasefire and bolster international solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
He added that one of the most significant outcomes of the coordinated Arab efforts is the failure of attempts to displace Palestinians, in line with the resolutions of the Arab and Islamic summits and the principles of international legitimacy, leading toward a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.
