Amman, Sept 8 (Petra) – Director of the Jordan Traffic Institute, Brig. Gen. Raed Al-Assaf, warned Monday that sand and loose materials from cargo trucks pose serious risks to public safety, road traffic, and the environment, with flying debris having an impact comparable to lethal projectiles.

Al-Assaf explained that a 5-kilogram object dislodged from a moving truck can hit with the force equivalent to 100 kilograms, underlining the need to fully cover and securely fasten cargo.

He noted that while Jordan’s traffic law addresses all driver violations, cargo trucks carry particular risks due to unsecured or uncovered loads, which can endanger road users and the surrounding environment.

Violations for failing to secure or cover loads are subject to legal penalties, and preventive measures must be taken to stop dust or materials from dispersing from vehicles.

Al-Assaf added that such violations are monitored around the clock by traffic inspectors.

Earlier, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) cautioned against the dangers of improperly secured loads, highlighting that falling or flying cargo can cause serious accidents, obstruct drivers’ visibility, and create environmental damage. The directorate stressed it will strictly enforce legal and administrative measures against offending drivers and vehicle owners to protect lives and property.

Truck drivers were urged to follow road safety rules, ensure cargo is properly secured according to standards, and cooperate with traffic and security patrols to maintain safe road conditions.
