Amman, Nov. 16 (Petra) – The Basmat Al-Hayat Charity Association on Sunday organized the event "Saving One Million Meals from Waste," as part of its year-round Hifz Al-Ni’ma initiative, a national model for surplus-food management and food sustainability.
The initiative aims to collect clean surplus food from five-star hotels and deliver it to low-income families in underprivileged areas, through a process that ensures compliance with food-safety and quality standards. Meals are provided daily through an open buffet that allows families to choose what suits them, helping reduce food waste and strengthen social solidarity.
Khalil Haj Tawfiq, President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and honorary president of the association, said Hifz Al-Ni’ma is more than a charitable project; it is a national mission to combat food waste and turn it into an opportunity to support thousands of families in need. He added that saving one million meals marks a milestone and a national humanitarian achievement rooted in Jordan’s values of preserving blessings and helping those in need.
He explained that the idea was launched in response to a humanitarian and national call after reports revealed that Jordan wastes nearly one million tons of food annually. This prompted the creation of an initiative that transforms waste into generosity, supported by more than 300 volunteers and partnerships with hotels, restaurants, and national institutions. These efforts enabled the project to reach thousands of beneficiary families and distribute meals under the highest public-health and safety standards, with official licensing from relevant authorities.
For his part, the association’s Institutional Development Director, Moath Al-Bayk, said reaching one million meals would not have been possible without joint efforts and the commitment of partner institutions to impactful social responsibility. He added that the initiative has become a national model in reducing food waste.
He announced a new expansion phase involving an increase in the number of hotels and entities supplying meals, extending operations to new areas across the Kingdom, and developing an advanced digital system to manage food-preservation and distribution processes. The initiative also aims to further enhance health standards and service quality to ensure sustainability and lasting humanitarian impact.
Basmat Al-Hayat implements various programs supporting low-income families, including children’s skills development, orphan sponsorship, home renovation, seasonal assistance, and the Hifz Al-Ni’ma project, one of the Kingdom’s leading models in reducing food waste and promoting social solidarity.
