Amman, December 7 (Petra) -- Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi on Sunday received Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

The meeting followed up on discussions held in November in Barcelona during the Union for the Mediterranean Forum and focused on strengthening the long-standing Jordanian-European strategic partnership across various sectors.

Safadi and Kallas reviewed preparations for the Jordanian-European Summit, scheduled to convene in Amman on December 8 with the participation of His Majesty King Abdullah II, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Safadi praised the European Union's continued support to Jordan in multiple developmental and economic fields.

The two sides discussed regional developments, with Safadi calling for upholding the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, ensuring its full implementation and facilitating the immediate, sufficient and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip.

He urged moving to the agreement's second phase and linking stability to a clear political horizon that leads to an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the two-state solution.

Safadi discussed the need to halt the dangerous escalation and illegal Israeli measures in the occupied West Bank, as well as violations of the historical and legal status quo at Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem.

The ministers discussed developments in Syria, with Safadi reaffirming Jordan's support for efforts to rebuild the country on the basis of principles that safeguard Syria's unity, security, sovereignty, stability and the safety of its people and territory.

He condemned the continued Israeli aggression and occupation of part of Syrian territory, describing it as a clear violation of the sovereignty of an Arab state and the UN Charter.

Safadi and Kallas reaffirmed the strength of the Jordan-EU strategic partnership and committed to further expanding cooperation in ways that serve mutual interests and advance regional security and stability.
